Friday  9/23/16 - Dynamic & Static

What characters from the book, "The Cat in the Hat" exemplify dynamic and static characters? Tell me which character is an example of each quality. Provide evidence from the book, and explain your evidence.

Please structure your response as below:

Dynamic

Claim: The ____ is an example of a dynamic character.

Evidence: "Put a direct quote here" (you may need two for dynamic)

Analysis: Explain why your quote supports your claim.

Static

Claim: The _____ is an example of a static character.

Evidence: "Put a direct quote here"

Analysis: Explain why your quote supports your claim.

Here are the definitions of static and dynamic we previously covered in class:

Static - Character remains the same throughout the plot
Dynamic - Character demonstrates a change in attitude or behavior as the plot develops

Bellwork 9/16-9/22

Friday 9/16 What Kind of Character are You?

First, I want you pretend that you are a character in a novel, and that the narrator is describing you using direct characterization.

Next, I want you to use indirect characterization, by describing yourself from another’s point of view (ie. your mom, dad, sibling, friend, or teacher).

In both cases, I want you to address speech, behavior, physical characteristics, and appearance.

Monday 9/19 STEAL - Methods of Characterization

Copy down the following into your composition books:

Speech: What does the character say? How does the character speak?
Thoughts: What is revealed through the character’s private thoughts and feelings?
Effect on others toward the character: What is revealed through the character’s effect on other people? How do other characters feel or behave in reaction to the character?
Actions: What does the character do? How does the character behave?
Looks: What does the character look like? How does the character dress?

Tuesday 9/20/16 - Bret Lott, "Night"

Interpret the following piece of flash fiction. When you read the story, what comes to mind? What do you think is going on? Where is the child? The wife only has two lines: "yesterday...why not yesterday?" Why does she say this? What's up with the room? What is your conclusion about the piece, and what specific examples from the text lead you to that conclusion?

Wednesday 9/21/16 - Cat in the Hat Characters

Watch the animated film, "The Cat in the Hat" (see link below). Take Cornell notes by analyzing indirect characterization for the Cat, the Fish, the Boy, and the Girl. The characters should be on the left side of your notes, and their characterization should be on the right.
